Μερικοί, λοιπόν, από τους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ άρχισαν να λένε: «Αυτός δεν
είναι ο άνθρωπος που ζητούν να σκοτώσουν;
26
Και όμως, δείτε! μιλάει δημόσια και δεν του λένε τίποτα. Μήπως οι άρχοντες
έχουν γνωρίσει σίγουρα ότι αυτός είναι ο Χριστός;
27
Ωστόσο, αυτόν τον γνωρίζουμε από πού είναι· όταν όμως έρθει ο Χριστός, κανείς
δεν θα γνωρίζει από πού είναι».
28
Γι’ αυτό, ο Ιησούς φώναξε καθώς δίδασκε στο ναό και είπε: «Και εμένα γνωρίζετε
και από πού είμαι γνωρίζετε. Και δεν έχω έρθει με δική μου πρωτοβουλία, αλλά
αυτός που με έστειλε είναι πραγματικός, και εσείς δεν τον γνωρίζετε.

Εγώ τον γνωρίζω, επειδή είμαι εκπρόσωπος από αυτόν, και Εκείνος με απέστειλε».

Γι’ αυτό, άρχισαν να ζητούν να τον πιάσουν, αλλά κανείς δεν έβαλε χέρι πάνω του,
επειδή δεν είχε έρθει ακόμη η ώρα του.
31
Παρ’ όλα αυτά, πολλοί από το πλήθος έθεσαν πίστη σε αυτόν· και άρχισαν να λένε:
«Όταν έρθει ο Χριστός, μήπως θα εκτελέσει περισσότερα σημεία από όσα έχει
εκτελέσει αυτός;»

Οι Φαρισαίοι άκουσαν το πλήθος να γογγύζει λέγοντας αυτά τα πράγματα για αυτόν,
και οι πρωθιερείς και οι Φαρισαίοι έστειλαν υπηρέτες να τον πιάσουν.

Είπε, λοιπόν, ο Ιησούς: «Θα είμαι λίγο ακόμη μαζί σας πριν πάω σε εκείνον που με
έστειλε.
34
Θα με αναζητήσετε αλλά δεν θα με βρείτε, και εκεί που είμαι εγώ εσείς δεν
μπορείτε να έρθετε».
35
Οι Ιουδαίοι, λοιπόν, είπαν μεταξύ τους: «Πού σκοπεύει να πάει αυτός, ώστε εμείς
δεν θα τον βρούμε; Μήπως σκοπεύει να πάει στους Ιουδαίους τους διεσπαρμένους
ανάμεσα στους Έλληνες και να διδάξει τους Έλληνες;

Τι σημαίνει αυτός ο λόγος που είπε: “Θα με αναζητήσετε αλλά δεν θα με βρείτε,
και εκεί που είμαι εγώ εσείς δεν μπορείτε να έρθετε”;»

Την τελευταία ημέρα, τη μεγάλη ημέρα της γιορτής, ο Ιησούς στεκόταν όρθιος και
φώναξε, λέγοντας: «Αν κανείς διψάει, ας έρθει σε εμένα και ας πιει.

Αυτός που θέτει πίστη σε εμένα, όπως είπε η Γραφή, “Από τα σωθικά του θα
ρεύσουν ποτάμια ζωντανού νερού”».

Ωστόσο, αυτό το είπε σχετικά με το πνεύμα το οποίο επρόκειτο να λάβουν εκείνοι
που έθεσαν πίστη σε αυτόν· διότι μέχρι τότε δεν υπήρχε πνεύμα, επειδή ο Ιησούς
δεν είχε ακόμη δοξαστεί.

Μερικοί, λοιπόν, από το πλήθος που άκουσαν αυτά τα λόγια άρχισαν να λένε: «Αυτός
είναι σίγουρα Ο Προφήτης».
41
Άλλοι έλεγαν: «Αυτός είναι ο Χριστός». Μερικοί όμως έλεγαν: «Μήπως ο Χριστός
έρχεται, τάχα, από τη Γαλιλαία;
42
Δεν είπε η Γραφή ότι ο Χριστός έρχεται από τους απογόνους του Δαβίδ και από τη
Βηθλεέμ, το χωριό όπου ήταν ο Δαβίδ;»
43
Έτσι λοιπόν, έγινε διαίρεση σχετικά με αυτόν ανάμεσα στο πλήθος.
44
Μερικοί δε από αυτούς ήθελαν να τον πιάσουν, αλλά κανείς δεν έβαλε τα χέρια πάνω
του.
45
Οι υπηρέτες, λοιπόν, γύρισαν στους πρωθιερείς και στους Φαρισαίους, και
εκείνοι τους είπαν: «Γιατί δεν τον φέρατε;»
46
Οι υπηρέτες αποκρίθηκαν: «Ποτέ δεν έχει μιλήσει έτσι άλλος άνθρωπος».
47
Και οι Φαρισαίοι απάντησαν: «Μήπως παροδηγηθήκατε και εσείς;
48
Μήπως κανείς από τους άρχοντες ή από τους Φαρισαίους έθεσε πίστη σε αυτόν;
49
Αυτό το πλήθος, όμως, που δεν γνωρίζει το Νόμο είναι καταραμένοι άνθρωποι».

Ο Νικόδημος, που είχε έρθει σε αυτόν παλιότερα και ήταν ένας από αυτούς,
τους είπε:

«Μήπως ο νόμος μας κρίνει έναν άνθρωπο χωρίς πρώτα να τον ακούσει και να
γνωρίσει τι κάνει;»
52
Απαντώντας τού είπαν: «Μήπως είσαι και εσύ από τη Γαλιλαία; Ερεύνησε και δες
ότι κανένας προφήτης δεν πρόκειται να εγερθεί από τη Γαλιλαία».*

25 Therefore some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem began to say: “This is the man they are seeking to kill, is it not? 26 And yet, see! he is speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. The rulers have not come to know for a certainty that this is the Christ, have they? 27 On the contrary, we know where this man is from; yet when the Christ comes, no one is to know where he is from.” 28 Therefore Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple and said: “YOU both know me and know where I am from. Also, I have not come of my own initiative, but he that sent me is real, and YOU do not know him. 29 I know him, because I am a representative from him, and that One sent me forth.” 30 Hence they began seeking to get hold of him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many of the crowd put faith in him; and they commenced saying: “When the Christ arrives, he will not perform more signs than this man has performed, will he?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees dispatched officers to get hold of him. 33 Therefore Jesus said: “I continue a little while longer with YOU before I go to him that sent me. 34 YOU will look for me, but YOU will not find me, and where I am YOU cannot come.” 35 Therefore the Jews said among themselves: “Where does this [man] intend going, so that we shall not find him? He does not intend to go to the [Jews] dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he? 36 What does this saying mean that he said, ‘YOU will look for me, but YOU will not find me, and where I am YOU cannot come’?”
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus was standing up and he cried out, saying: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 He that puts faith in me, just as the Scripture has said, ‘Out from his inmost part streams of living water will flow.’” 39 However, he said this concerning the spirit which those who put faith in him were about to receive; for as yet there was no spirit, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. 40 Therefore some of the crowd that heard these words began saying: “This is for a certainty The Prophet.” 41 Others were saying: “This is the Christ.” But some were saying: “The Christ is not actually coming out of Galilee, is he? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ is coming from the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem the village where David used to be?” 43 Therefore a division over him developed among the crowd. 44 Some of them, though, were wanting to get hold of him, but no one did lay [his] hands upon him.
45 Therefore the officers went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, and the latter said to them: “Why is it YOU did not bring him in?” 46 The officers replied: “Never has [another] man spoken like this.” 47 In turn the Pharisees answered: “YOU have not been misled also, have YOU? 48 Not one of the rulers or of the Pharisees has put faith in him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law are accursed people.” 50 Nicodemus, who had come to him previously, and who was one of them, said to them: 51 “Our law does not judge a man unless first it has heard from him and come to know what he is doing, does it?” 52 In answer they said to him: “You are not also out of Galilee, are you? Search and see that no prophet is to be raised up out of Galilee.”
Manuscripts אBSys omit verses 53 to chapter 8, verse 11, which read (with some variations in the various Greek texts and versions) as follows:
